In our small village of Baio Dora, there were already spontaneous ensembles playing fifes and drums at carnival in the early 1950s.
In 1977, some members of the Carnival Committee at the time decided to attempt to form a group of fifes and drums made up of very young boys, and so our village too began to contribute to keeping alive that tradition of melodious and unique playing that has its roots in the 16th century in the formations present in the Savoy armies.
Since then, the group has gradually grown into an important gathering.
In the early 1980s, young people, who were particularly attached to traditions, increased the group and gave it a new uniform, and in those years, with a great satisfaction of the then President of the Republic Sandro Pertini, during a visit to Turin, there were the Pifferi e Tamburi di Baio Dora waiting for him at the foot of the plane's steps!
In the years that followed, the group took part in numerous events in Piedmont, Valle d'Aosta, Lombardy and Tuscany. In 1986, it was equipped with a new uniform (still in use today) consisting of blue trousers with a silver band, a red jacket with silver tails and buttons, and black cuffs and collar. As headgear, we use the so-called “Frigio” hat of French revolutionary origin.
In 2014, two innovations were introduced with a view to renewal. The creation of the 'flag & banners department' with girls wearing new costumes consisting of a blue skirt, red jacket, long blue cape and feathered tricorn hat. We also replaced the wooden drums with new polished brass instruments with a much more elegant appearance and fuller sound.
In 2017, we celebrated our 40th anniversary with a wonderful gathering, where, in addition to the neighbouring fifes and drum groups, the German 'Fanfarenzug Zell I.W.' group from the Black Forest area (Germany) also came together.
In June 2018, we were the ones who brought our traditions to Germany as guests of the Fanfarenzug accompanied by our friends from the Gruppo Musicale 'Gli amis d'Albian' from Albiano di Ivrea. We spent fabulous days there and thus was born an Italian-German twinning of "three" Pifferi Tamburi Baio Dora - Fanfarenzug Zell - Amis D'Albian strengthened by great mutual esteem and friendship.
The year 2019 also saw us expand our friendships with France. In the occasion of the International Gathering of Pipes and Drums held in Ivrea, organised by the local group, we accepted the invitation to collaborate with a guest group. We thus met the Fifres et Tambours 'Les Amis du Poulain de Pésenas' with whom a sincere and pleasant friendship was born.
In 2023, we got a new summer uniform and had the honour and pleasure of participating in the prestigious BASEL Tattoo Parade, which takes place in the Swiss city of Basel together with 70 other groups from all over the world in front of an audience of 120,000 spectators along the streets.
Our current line-up consists of around 30 members ranging in age from 5 to 55.
